John Hanratty, 8th Dan, is the founder of the Canadian Shotokan Karate Association. His martial arts journey began amidst the remnants of war-torn Liverpool, England, at the legendary Red Triangle karate club. Growing up among the ruins and industrial grit of a city rebounding from World War II imbued him with resilience and determination. For over half a century, Sensei Hanratty has dedicated himself to the art, imparting his knowledge to thousands of karateka at seminars around the world. In this revelatory and deeply personal book, he unveils his fighting philosophy and delivers practical advice on fortifying both body and mind to conquer any challenge.

From the Author: "Back in the early 1990s I developed a manual for the Canadian Shotokan instructor’s course. A large part of this manual was put into the NCCP technical course for Karate. Since then I have conducted countless courses and revised and upgraded the manual many times. I have also had many requests to publish the “Handbook” as a standalone work. Therefore I have decided to make it available in print and as an e-book. If you are looking for a resource into teaching methods, building lesson plans, exploring the philosophy of Shotokan Karate, as well as advice on dojo management and many other aspects of teaching, training and coaching, this is for you."

Dan Kostka, the Canadian-born son of a Slovak immigrant, found himself in the heart of a burgeoning crisis while visiting family in Slovakia in the winter of 2022. Unexpectedly, the tranquility of his visit was shattered when Russia invaded neighbouring Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
Spurred into action, Dan undertook several long journeys to the Ukrainian border, delivering vital supplies and returning with refugees bound for the safety of Slovakia’s capital. Dan was far from alone; he was just one of many thousands across Europe who rallied to provide direct aid to Ukrainian refugees in the desperate weeks and months following the invasion.
This deeply personal account, woven from intimate voice recordings and journal entries made during this tumultuous period, also features compelling photos from Dan’s border trips. A testament to the enduring human spirit, his story is a moving and inspiring reminder of how ordinary individuals can effect change in times of crisis.
